The
Superbe
"Superbe"--
a French war ship of 74 cannons. The last ship to be built from the
plans of Jacques Noel Sané and approved by Louis XVI. She was begun
in 1782 and launched in 1784. "Superbe" is a ship typical of the French
navy of this period .
The
architect Jacques Noel Sané (born at Brest in February 1740;
engineer of the "Corps du Génie Maritime") worked more than 30 years
on warships for the French navy. In 1782 his plans were designated "...approved
by the king to construct all ships in different ports of the kingdom".
Superbe
was part of the fleet of admiral Villaret-Joyeuse. Sailing out of the Brest
channel on 1st of January 1795 she had to face violent storms. Superbe
and her crew fought until the 30th of January against huge leaks in the
hull, until the order to abandon ship was given by the admiral and she
sank off the coast of France.
